Lately, my home office has been feeling a bit lonely. I love working 20 feet from my bedroom – the commute is awesome. But sometimes I crave the energy of an office and chatting with colleagues (in person – not just over Zoom). Heck being closer to downtown wouldn’t hurt either.
So, I began looking into co-working spaces. My hard-requirement was to find one that allowed me to reserve a desk for 1-2 days each week, as much of my work still needs to happen from home. As fortune would have it, I found a great spot opening up near my home with exactly the energy I was looking for. However, as it is a developing space, some of their processes are still not ironed out. Specifically, they don’t yet have a desk reservation system.
Given that I need a desk for only a couple of days each week – this is a vital system for them to have in place to meet my needs.
Luckily, this is a great use-case for Airtable. The end product is simple enough:
- Create a calendar view and embed it on a web-page for all to see
- Create a form view where members can reserve desks, also on the web-page
- Create a Zapier integration that sends an email to members, confirming their reservations
So, with those parameters I set out to build this for their team. The best part about this was it gave me a chance to practice creating a UI using Google Sheets – something that is increasingly popular with clients who don’t want their full teams on their pro accounts.

On a related note, one day after building this system, I was speaking with a client who is heading to a 4-day trade show. This client mentioned he wished he had a system that allowed him to make appointments with prospects there and then on the showroom floor. Needless to say, a modified version of this same calendar was the perfect solution for him – it will allow him to take all the prospect details down, store them in a base, and schedule consultations with his sales agents on the spot. Pretty awesome.
